ENCAMS is the organisation which runs the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, and manages a number of local environmental quality
programmes such as the Blue Flag for beaches and Eco-Schools.
In early 2002 ENCAMS commissioned Marketing Works, a market research agency,to carry out face-to-face focus groups and interviews with 13 to 16 year-old children. The research objective was to understand their littering behaviour and try to see if there were common attitudes that emerged, particularly in relation to the following:
• their opinions of litter;
• why they litter and how often;
• their perception of the effectiveness of current
anti-litter measures at school;
• their reactions to a range of litter-related stimuli;
• their general views on anti-litter measures.
Below is their report.

Bulb Planting at Dalton Park
25/11/06 by Stuart Ellis and Stephen Gibney Shotton Hall School

On the 25th of September 2006 a wide variety of people took part in a bulb-planting event at Dalton Park.
Young people from various organisations, e.g. the youth Forum and East Durham Partnership, all gathered to plant yellow daffodil bulbs on a hill to the left of the shopping centre itself.

We asked Karen, aged 15 how hard the event was, her reply was;
“It wasn’t hard, it was actually quite fun”

Many people said that they enjoyed getting dirty and planting the ‘beautiful bulbs’and the work effort was amazing.
Everyone worked quite quickly and was finished within a couple of hours.
Stuart aged 12 said, “I heard about the event through the youth forum.” All together, there was 5 to 6 thousand bulbs to plant but we managed no problem, with a bit of help from our trusty metal friends, the spade!
